چکیده

Background: Bean is an important nutritious food and cash crop. productivity low mostly due to various abiotic, biotic socio-economic constraints. The aims of this study were assess constraints high bean seed yield productivity, determine farmers’ perceptions on drought soil fertility, strategies farmers are practicing adapt the preferred traits. Methods: A Participatory rural appraisal approach was applied by administering a questionnaire 139 household representatives from Bazale, Phalula Utale areas in 2017. Result: Farmers (68.4%) cultivated beans under irrigation winter (dry) season most them practiced sole cropping. Constraints include fertility (31.7%) deforestation (81.3%) contributed lot. (44.6%) implemented afforestation, 32.4% grew early maturing varieties, while 20.9% conservation agriculture. not involved variety development as indicated 91.4% respondents. However, determinate plant type (95.7%), creamy taste (61.2%) number pods per (47.4%). These traits need be considered ongoing improvement program(s) increase adoption rate improved varieties.

Drought Tolerance in Wild Plant Populations: The Case of Common Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

Reliable estimations of drought tolerance in wild plant populations have proved to be challenging and more accessible alternatives are desirable. With that in mind, an ecological diversity study was conducted based on the geographical origin of 104 wild common bean accessions to estimate drought tolerance in their natural habitats. Our wild population sample covered a range of mesic to very dry...

Diversification and Population Structure in Common Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

Wild accessions of crops and landraces are valuable genetic resources for plant breeding and for conserving alleles and gene combinations in planta. The primary genepool of cultivated common beans includes wild accessions of Phaseolus vulgaris. These are of the same species as the domesticates and therefore are easily crossable with cultivated accessions. Molecular marker assessment of wild bea...

Soil Fertility: QUEFTS and Farmers’ Perceptions

Soil fertility is one of many factors which influence farmers’ choices regarding agricultural production, fertilisation and soil and water conservation. Before we can study the effects however, we need to measure soil fertility. We use the QUEFTS model (QUantitative Evaluation of the Fertility of Tropical Soils Janssen et al., 1990), which predicts crop yields from chemical soil characteristics...

Nutritive Value of Navy Beans (phaseolus Vulgaris).

It has been known since 1920 (Johns & Finks, 1920) that the navy bean is an inferior source of protein for rats. Everson & Heckert (1944) reported that raw navy beans were injurious to rats when given at a 10% protein level. They also reported that autoclaving the beans destroyed the injurious effect. Kakade & Evans (1963a, b) confirmed this report and observed that rats given 10% protein as ra...
